You can't enter the portal if you did not find the quest item. Go back up the stairs then.. There are two bone piles, click on the left one to get Otto Gnobol's Diary. Return to Adelia Gnobol and give her the bad news and you will receive 20k epool. That's not the end of it! Search in the left room of the house and click on the harp to insert the gem you got from the ghouls and then look for a secret passageway on the south wall and go through it.
